Live Cooperatively in the Janet Smith House!
We are a community of activists, students, and community members focused on providing low-income housing and a safer space for Black and Indigenous people, people of color, international students, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. We aim to foster a radical organizing space to live intentionally with each other and work towards making this world a little better. All Janet members have their own single/wing rooms with access to furniture if desired.
What does community look like at The Janet Smith?
Being a member of a cooperative is a great opportunity to build community. We love to hang out and watch movies, play board games, go on hikes, build things, garden, forage, make art, play music, and study together. We have a piano, an unending collection of zines, a tool room, a bike-fixing corner, a movie-projector, a sauna, a garden for growing, a free-clothes and things pile, endless craft supplies, a cool attic filled with murals, some very cute reading nooks, and lots of other things we get to collectively enjoy.
We love to cook together and offer six house dinners a week. All of our meals are celiac and vegan friendly, although we do allow meat in the house.
Living in a cooperative allows us to share our spaces and resources with the public. We regularly host various shows and events for the public including music shows, open-mic poetry jams, seed and plant exchanges, and clothing sales. We also host a community free-fridge, which sits just outside our front porch and is open to all Eugene community members. We love to make meals for the fridge, or pick up food to make sure it’s filled up.
Our house shares chores and we contribute around 6 hours per member each week. These chores consist of cooking, cleaning, gardening, and serving in board positions to keep our co-op running smoothly. We have mandatory house meetings on a weekly basis where we discuss house decisions and vote through consensus.
