Founded in 1990 by a group of environmentally active students, our home’s name was inspired by Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, intended to signify our commitment to living in a sustainable manner. Just across the street from the U of O campus, and 2 blocks away from a bus line to the LCC campus, The Lorax Manner is a community striving towards:
- Sustainable living
- DIY attitudes
- Cooperation
- Creating a safe space for marginalized folks
Member-owned and operated, our house supports a creative and fun environment! Membership fees include utilities, internet, and a food plan, while amenities include:
- 2 pianos
- Garden
- Fire pit
- Library
- Free closet
- Tool room
- Bike shop
- Large kitchen
- Laundry room
- Music room
- Large common spaces
- Furnished bedrooms w/ bed, desk, and chair
Our house frequently hosts workshops, we have movie & craft nights, we throw parties, and we set up clothing swaps! Daily activities in the house include members sharing their art, music, and cooking skills with one another; listening to music in the kitchen, studying, and eating meals together.
Pictionary, telephone, & bananagrams are all house favorites!
We are a cooperative that uses consensus to make major house decisions. This means that we reject hierarchy, and value every voice in the room!
As co-op members, we attend weekly Sunday meetings, and contribute to the upkeep of the house through elected positions (such as House President, Food Co-ord, Job Co-ord, etc.) and weekly chores. These commitments keep our community clean, safe, and fun!
